Rogers' Blog for March

Chairman’s Waffle

I think I’m going to fall asleep before I finish this. I’m absolutely whacked out from the driving day at Somerly. I was up at 6am this morning to leave for 7. I’d loaded ‘baby’ onto the trailer the night before so all I had to do was jump in the Disco & drive there.

Tony, Stu, Ron Fisher & I spent a good 4 hours putting all the signs & tiger tape out on the Saturday. That’s quite rewarding when people take notice of the signs & don’t just drive anywhere. There were a few that did ‘bend’ the rules but I’m pleased to say our members were very well behaved.

Gordon & Lin did a fantastic job of the signing on, huge thanks guys.

The day was extremely well attended with 86 drivers signed on. Fantastic! The whole idea to raise funds for the club was realized. That will mean a brand new gazebo for the club shows etc & no worries about bills for a bit.

We’re talking about another for later in the year but we’re not sure were yet. Somerly is an ideal venue of course & swallowed up 60 cars at a time with no effort.

The show season is upon us! Steve is giving up as organizer this year after many years service, if you think you’d like to fill this post then get in touch. It’s a non committee role so you only need to deal with the shows.

The shows are a good front to the club & the members that attend are ambassadors. What they do at the shows gives the whole impression of what we do. If we all just sat in the gazebo knitting it wouldn’t give a very good impression (unless you like knitting!) so shows like Langford where we have an off road display are great. Good displays at static shows are all we can do sometimes so we need to be as welcoming & accessible as possible. Give a show a go, you might like it.

The return to Mannington was years too late but very welcome. The leg pulling about Martin missing it & possibly losing the lead on the trophy board was huge fun. As it turned out, stu only did the first section before a breakage sent him home. So a plan was hatched (nothing to do with me) to put some bogus scores on the website knowing Martin would be checking later, tee hee.

More leg pulling at Tinkleton when Martin lent the use of his 90 to Harold when his own 90 wouldn’t stay in low range. Harold did a little better than expected I think!

More sad news this year with the passing of Ross Gilbertson. Husband of Sheila & father to Dave & Debbie. Ross is better know for his speedway riding but used to do the odd trial many years ago along with the odd camping trip or show. He’d been fighting illness for many years but that made the news no less saddening. I remember Ross from the couple of parties at their home, he was a lovely man, very welcoming. My deepest sympathies to all the family.

Take a look through the forthcoming events, there’s quite a lot going on. There are some more social events to get you all out & about as well as the usual trials & off road stuff.

Not sure how many of you are using the website either. The Photo competition has got a few entries but needs more cracking pictures. They don’t even need to be Landie orientated.

I’m going to book a campsite for a weekend club camping & green lane trip. I’m looking towards Somerset, there are some nice lanes in that part of our world. Leave the August bank hols free to come along, that’ll give us from Friday night to Monday. I’ll put more details in the next newsletter but leave it free now.

The last few weeks have been manic with work & club things, I’ve been rushing to get things done before we go on our jollies & I’m typing this the night before we fly off.

Hopefully we’ll see you at the skittles night then. Bye for now.
