Its looking very unlikely that Jan and i will be able to reclaim/retain the club trophies as the Defender failed its MOT today.
I had left it a bit late as we've just returned from our hols.
The vehicle failed on five items two of which I've fixed this evening and one that I've located the problem.
Fixed:
Mud in offside indicator repeater
Sticking handbrake - brake dust in adjuster mechanism
Identified:
Small hole (10mm x 8mm) in rear chassis nicely marked up by Mr MOT.
They also say there is corrosion in the front o/s chassis but I've had a good look and poke around and I cant find any.
Also they state there is excessive play in the steering at the wheel. With the engine not running there seems to be about 1 1/2 inches but with the engine running the wheels turn as soon as you move the steering wheel.
I'm sure Eric could do the welding for me quick smart (if we can find the problem) but the steering may be a bit more problematic. Any ideas guys?

Oh dear. The handbrake is
Oh dear.
The handbrake is most likely crud (technical term) in the expander. Unfortunately you have to completely strip the entire handbrake to get it out. Strip (not you!),clean it up, lots of grease & refit.
The welding's easy to fix.
If the mot man is used to testing cars with steering racks rather than box's he won't be used to the play. box's are allowed more play. 1 1/2" is nothing & very good for a landy. Argue the point (or find a landy freindly station!).

Yes, I thought 1 1/2 inches
Yes, I thought 1 1/2 inches wasn't bad - its the station just up from AL Services (Willis Way Motors) and they do all of AL's trucks so they're used to Landy's. My Series 1 has about 3" at the rim and I've been told that should go through OK!
I fixed the handbrrake last night and it was brake dust in the expander mechanism. This was probably caused by me putting new shoes in and bedding them in last weekend!
The weldings only easy to fix if I can find what they complained about at the front. I had a really good scrape around and couldn't find any problems at all.

They normaly mark rust with
They normaly mark rust with some yellow chalk/crayon??
I took it back to the MOT
I took it back to the MOT station and got them to point it out - it was on the inside of the dumb irons behind the winch bumper. Truck was left at AL for them to do the welding, adjust the steering box (if possible) and resubmit it for MOT. So here's hoping!
